Mixed media collage

My artwork comes from a desire to capture the beauty that I see in nature, culture, and human experience, and re-interpret it through my own quirky sensibility.  I often employ decorative motifs that suggest a personal or interpretive meaning.  Universal imagery such as flowers, fans, butterflies, and stars connote abstract concepts, such as growth, sensuality, purity, and freedom. I am inspired by delicacy of traditional needlework crafts, such as embroidery, sewing, quilting, and beadwork.  On the other hand, I am equally inspired by the boldness, innovation, and conceptuality of contemporary, modern, and abstract art.

I am not satisfied with a piece until it is full of detail.  I want viewers to notice something different in a piece every time they look at it.  To this end, the materials I use are key, and can include exotic handmade papers, origami papers, Xeroxed text, recycled gift wrap, rubber stamping, beads, thread, leaves, colored pencil, glitter pens, and anything else that seems right.  I don't consider anything complete until I think, "This is something that I could hang up in my home and enjoy."  I hope that others find themselves thinking the same thing.
